Communication is one of the most important skills a person can develop. Whether at school, at work, or in everyday life, strong communication skills help us build relationships, share ideas, solve problems, and achieve our goals. Throughout my journey in Canada, I have learned that communication is much more than speaking. It includes listening, understanding, writing, and connecting with others effectively.
When I came to Canada in 2018, communication was one of my most significant challenges because I did not speak English. I remember feeling nervous when speaking to people or trying to understand conversations. This experience taught me how important communication is in daily life. To strengthen my skills, I attended ESL (English as a Second Language) classes, where I practiced speaking, reading, writing, and listening. Over time, my confidence grew, and I became more comfortable communicating with others.
As I continued my education at Seneca Polytechnic, communication became even more important. During my studies in public administration, I learned that effective communication is essential in government organizations and public service. Public employees must communicate clearly with residents, coworkers, and community stakeholders. Clear communication helps people understand policies, programs, and services while reducing confusion and misunderstandings.
My internship with the Town of Newmarket also showed me the importance of communication in the workplace. Working in the finance department required attention to detail and professional communication. I learned how to write professional emails, ask questions when needed, and work collaboratively with colleagues. Strong communication skills helped me perform my responsibilities more effectively and build positive working relationships.
Today, I am studying public relations–corporate communications at Seneca Polytechnic. This program has given me an even more profound understanding of communication. Public relations professionals use communication to build trust, manage relationships, share information, and support organizational goals. Through courses in media relations, digital communications, and strategic communication planning, I have learned how important it is to communicate the right message to the right audience.
Communication skills are valuable in every profession. Employers search for individuals who can express their ideas clearly, listen carefully, and work effectively with others. Strong communication skills can improve teamwork, leadership, customer service, and problem-solving abilities. They also help people adapt to new situations and build professional networks.

Communication is equally important in our personal lives. It helps us build friendships, strengthen family relationships, and understand different perspectives. Effective communication encourages respect, cooperation, and understanding between people from different backgrounds and experiences.
Looking back on my journey, I can see how much communication has helped me grow. From learning English as a newcomer to studying public administration and public relations, every experience has shown me the value of strong communication skills. I continue to improve these skills every day because they are essential for personal growth, professional success, and lifelong learning.
